Canadian retailers make food safety key priority

Nov. 6, 2008 – Since no company wants to see their name in the media associated with a
foodborne illness, the race is on to safeguard all aspects of the food
chain, from the field to the consumer.

foodborne illness, the race is on to safeguard all aspects of the food
chain, from the field to the consumer.

"Today’s educated consumers don’t just want to know what they’re
buying,” said Christian Chouinard, Loblaws director of product
development for Canada. "They want to know where it comes from and
every ingredient in it."

As a result, he said, grocery chains
must become specialists, researching how each producer grows the
product they buy and how to take the extra care required to keep it
