May 4, 2011, Toronto – The Bonnie Gordon College of Confectionary Arts is gearing up for its annual cake show on May 15.

The Cake Show, to be held at Artscape Wychwood Barns, will involve demos by school instructors, a bake sale, a cake design competition, and live challenges featuring fabulous cake designers.

Applications are still being accepted for the Design Competition. Entries will be on display from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm; the winner will be announced at 2:00 pm. The winner will receive a three-day class at Barry Callebaut Chocolate Academy, a complete airbrush system donated by Creative Cutters, and a 12-inch handcrafted cake plate donated by Lou Hanson Pottery.

The Cake Show will also feature a non-competitive student and alumni exhibition, showcasing the talent and imagination of current and past Bonnie Gordon students. Applications are still being accepted, and all participants will be entered into a draw for an 18-inch round cake stand donated by Robert Edward Woodworking.

Other contests scheduled during The Cake Show include:

  • The Cacao Barry Cupcake Challenge (1:00 pm to 2:00 pm), which gives three designers one hour to create six fabulously decorated cupcakes. The winner will be announced immediately following the competition.
  • The Celebrate May Live Challenge (2:30 pm to 3:30 pm), which pits three cake designers against each other – and the clock – as they decorate a two-tiered cake to reflect the spirit of May in just one hour. The winner, who will be announced at 3:30 pm, will receive $250 towards classes at the Bonnie Gordon College of Confectionary Arts, four full sets of Wilton Performance Pans, and a 10-inch handcrafted cake plate donated by Lou Hanson Pottery.
  • The Cake Star Face Off (12:00 pm to 5:00 pm), which gives three designers six hours to create a spectacular cake with a unique interpretation of the four seasons. The winner will be announced at 5:00 pm.

Judges for The Cake Show include Bakers Journal editor Laura Aiken, Catherine Lash (founder, editorial and creative director of The Wedding Co.), Roseanne Dela Rosa (associate editor of Wedding Bells), Catherine D'Agostino (owner and cake designer at We Bake in Heels), Derrick Tu Tan Pho (master chocolatier and pastry chef with Barry Callebaut), Leanne Winslow (president of Cake Central), Geraldine Randlesome (owner and cake designer with Creative Cutters), Lynne Jury (founder of the Canadian Cake Decorator's Guild and cake designer with Let Them Eat Cakes), and Susan Smyth-Bishop (owner and cake designer with Flour Powered).
