May 5, 2011, Summerland,
B.C. – The Cake Box Bakery is honouring 65 years of serving its community with
a facelift and grand re-opening party.
The Cake Box Bakery had its humble
beginnings back in the1920's in a small store at the back of what used to be
the Summerland Hotel (where SASS is located today). The Bakery moved to its
current location on Main St. (formerly known as Granville Road) in the 1930s
and was called Dunbar Bakery. In 1946, Jerry and Edith Hallquist bought the
operation and named it The Cake Box Bakery.
Subsequent owners were the Hodgsons
(1949), the Cosgroves (1970), the Woudas (1989), and the trio of Silvia Morf,
Tony Willies, and Markus Hunziker a Swiss trained baker and pastry chef (1999).
In 2004, Tony and Silvia moved to the Caribbean and left the operation in
Markus’ hands. In June 2006, the whole town honored The Cake Box Bakery's 60th
anniversary and the late Jerry Hallquist’s 90th birthday with a
street festival on Main.
Another five years have passed, and The
Cake Box has now been serving Summerland for 65 years. Although many would
consider retirement at that age, owner Markus Hunziker is instead giving the
Cake Box Bakery a "facelift" to modernize the bakery and better serve
his customers with daily fresh baking and pastries, soup and sandwiches. The bakery
is adding special dietary needs products as gluten-free breads and desserts, sweets
for diabetics and sugar and fat-free breads and buns.
The bakery store and coffee shop will be
closed from May 8 to May 16 for the renovations, but will reopen Tuesday, May 17.
Markus, Nicole, and staff invite customers, both old and new to the Grand
Reopening Celebration the morning of Saturday, May 21!
