Podcast: Maggie Frith of Great Canadian Baking Show on her new baking classes and go-to healthy ingredients
February 8, 2023 By Bakers Journal

We welcome Maggie Frith to the Bakers Journal podcast. Maggie owns and operates The Magpie Cakery in Toronto. The Magpie Cakery began as a recipe and how-to blog with trusted and tested-until-perfected recipes supported by beautiful imagery and graphics of her bakes. Baking served as a stress-reliever while Frith was practising becoming “a now-fully-recovered lawyer.” It quickly turned from a hobby to a passion and now, depending on who you ask, maybe a mild obsession:). She was selected as a contestant on Season 4 of the Great Canadian Baking Show and went on to become a semi- finalist.

Frith began hosting virtual baking classes and corporate events during the pandemic as a way of bringing people and colleagues together for a fun and educational event. When the world opened up again, she pivoted to in-person events and classes at a commercial kitchen and event space in Toronto’s east end, called Mess Hall. She is a now a partner at Mess Hall and is opening a new teaching space in early 2023 to spread the joy of baking!
In this podcast you will learn:
- How Maggie Frith found her experience on the Great Canadian Baking Show
- Whom she initially targeted for the classes and workshops and how that pool of clients grew and changed over time
- What some challenges are in adapting recipes to a healthier process or more functional ingredients
- Her go-to ingredients that pack a nutritional punch
