Oct. 13, 2008, McLean, Va. — The Retail Bakers of America (RBA) and participating retail bakeries are in Week 5 of their 2008 U.S. Presidential Election Cookie Poll, representing 24 states and 52 retail bakeries.

RBA’s poll shows Democratic Sen. Barack Obama in the lead by 14 percentage points over Republican Sen. John McCain, tracking closely to the more recognized election polls run by CNN and the Gallup Poll. The results of RBA’s 2004 poll were accurate in predicting George W. Bush’s election win, leading many to now follow the 2008 poll through to its conclusion on Election Day.

Maro Dimmer of Rheinlander Bakery in Arvada, Colo., says many of the teenagers they have working for them in their bakery are discussing the cookie poll in their government and economic classes. Some of the teachers are using RBA’s Election Cookie Poll Website as a visual aid during class.

More than 29,000 election cookies have been sold at participating bakeries since their poll locations opened on Sept. 6. Voters may vote as many times as they would like, and there is no age restriction. The option to vote absentee has now been made available, as election cookies can be purchased online at 1-800-Bakery.com.
