Chester, N.S. – Didier Julien and Laura Mulrooney, owners of Julien’s Bakery in Chester, N.S., announced the closure of the bakery after 33 years of operation.

“Many folks look forward to retirement but for me and Didier this is a difficult day,” Mulrooney said in a news release posted Feb. 1. “Our staff are our family – some have been witih us since our own adult children were babies. Baking is an art and a science, but it is also a physically demanding vocation and the Frenchman and I are ready for a quieter chapter.”

The couple’s family, including their children, have been part of the business for years.

Julien’s Bakery will continue to provide its breads and baked goods to Julien’s Patisserie, Bakery & Café, which has been independently owned since 2011. The bakery’s final market at the Halifax Seaport will be on April 2.
