Best Kind Bakehouse of Vancouver, B.C., last year’s winner of the Inspirational Bakery Contest, caught the judge’s attention with its feel-good origin story. After being laid off from their jobs due to the pandemic, bighearted owners Mark and Carly Burton steadily built a baking business that started with handing out loaves to friends and neighbours during the pandemic.

The bakery has a low footprint, delivering to local areas around Vancouver, or preparing them for curbside pickup. They bake in small batches, eliminate food waste by taking orders online prior to baking day and support local.

“We are tied to the community and we are tied to ingredients that grow here, they are the things that will grow best,” Mark told us in their cover story last July.

Inspired by Best Kind’s story? Enter the Jake the Baker Inspirational Bakery of the Year contest and your bakery could be in the limelight providing inspiration to fellow bakeries!

Leeanne Tucker and Travis Blake, proud owners of Westside Bakery in Edmonton, are the latest to enter the competition to be Jake the Baker Inspirational Bakery of the Year.

This can-do duo dreamed big to open a wholesale and commercial bakery and have plans to diversify with the help of their “mighty and growing team.”

Feeding the undernourished – in schools, kids’ sports leagues people in the wider community – even homeless dogs.

Good luck, Westside Bakery!

Tell us YOUR heartwarming story highlighting your community involvement, creativity and innovation! Don’t be shy: For every entry received, Bakers Journal and founding sponsor Ardent Mills will donate $50 to a worthy charity!
