Many bakeries, café and restaurants were hit by the COVID-19 pandemic; many businesses might be eligible for financial relief: On March 18, the Federal Government announced a relief plan that would help many businesses recuperate from losses experienced during the COVID-19 quarantine.

Emergency benefits to be made available in April for those who don’t qualify for EI: The new Emergency Care Benefit can pay up to $900 biweekly, up to 15 weeks, to provide income support to workers, including the self-employed, who have to stay home and don’t qualify for paid sick leave or employment insurance. The measure could disburse up to $10 billion in total.

The details still depend on the businesses’s provincial rate of employment and the number of hours each employer has worked in the last 52 weeks. The Federal government recommends that those affected apply as soon as possible to find out if they apply, as waiting more than a month after your last day of work might mean losing access to those benefits: If approved, the maximum amount paid out for Canadian Employment Insurance is $573 a week.

Those applying for EI will need records of employment; Quarantined workers can apply without the need for a medical certificate. For those who can not apply due to self-isolation, EI sickness benefits can be filed later and backdated, but that still presents some financial difficulty in the meantime.

The new Federal Relief Plan includes Emergency Care Benefit and the Emergency Support Benefit: For those who tested positive for the Coronavirus, the Emergency Care Benefit provides up to $900 every two weeks for up to 15 weeks.
