May 24, 2011, Vancouver – COBS Bread and Big Brothers Big Sisters are continuing a springtime tradition.

For the third year in a row, the two have teamed to develop a gourmet scone. On May 28 and 29, COBS will donate 50 cents from the sale of every apple butterscotch scone to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Many COBS locations will also be offering a variety of activities and special treats on those days, thanking community members for their support.

“Working with Big Brothers Big Sisters over the last few years has been an eye opening experience. We have seen firsthand the positive impact a Big Brother or a Big Sister can have on a Little,” said Elise Gillespie, vice president of COBS bread.

Each of the 128 Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies depends on donations to help recruit volunteers and reach more children. Funds raised are used to run background checks on volunteers in order to ensure child safety, and to provide ongoing support for children, families and volunteers to build long-lasting relationships.

“COBS Bread has raised $31,800 for Big Brothers Big Sisters since 2009, which has allowed agencies across the country to provide many children with the support of a mentor,” says Shannon Newman-Bennet, executive director of Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. “In addition, COBS has raised awareness of the urgent need for more Big Brother and Big Sister volunteers. COBS’ in-store campaigns have inspired many men and women to volunteer their time to provide encouragement and support to a young person in need in their community.”

This year, COBS hopes to raise more than $50,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across Canada.
