Oct. 10, 2014, Vancouver – Beta5 Chocolates, Christophe Morel and The
Violet Chocolate Company were among winners of the recent International Chocolate Awards 2014 Canadian national competition.
The competition saw strong repeat performances from Vancouver’s Beta5 Chocolates and Montreal’s Christophe Morel. Two Edmonton companies, The Violet Chocolate Company and Sweet Lollapalooza, won medals in several categories.
The
Violet Chocolate Company picked up a gold medal for its rosemary-honey bar.
Similarly, Christophe Morel’s Palet Or held onto its gold-medal status
for the third year in a row. And on the heels of its gold-medal win at
the 2013 World Finals, Beta5 Chocolates’ Fisherman’s Friend garnered a gold at this year’s Canadian competition.
The competition welcomed new companies to the awards podium, including Vancouver’s Temper Chocolate & Pastry, Edmonton’s Cococo Chocolatiers, Gusto Chocolate from Maple Ridge, B.C., Miss Chocolat from Hull, Que., and Hummingbird Chocolate from Mississippi Mills, Ont.
This
year’s competition was marked by flavours that veered into savoury
territory, such as lemon-dill, honey-roasted carrot, and habanero salt.
Christophe Morel’s “Le Bilboquet” beer ganache with barley praline was a
favourite with the judges, and Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie impressed many with their Bonbons Ananas Avocat, which included an unusual pineapple-avocado ganache.
Well-executed
classics won their share of medals, like Cococo Chocolatier’s milk
chocolate caramel and Hummingbird Chocolate’s Dominican Republic bar
with Vancouver Island sea salt.
