Here's to the heroes
Nov. 11, 2009 – It's crunch time here at Bakers Journal as we wrap up our December issue and look ahead to our combined January/February issue and beyond. But amid all the hustle and bustle of the nascent holiday season, I wanted to pause for a moment to thank and pay tribute to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for the sake of our freedom.

However, it's been disappointing to hear of all the legal wrangling over the use of the poppy image. Last week a bakery in Cobourg, Ont., was told by the Canadian Legion to stop selling cookies decorated in the likeness of a poppy. I've also heard raging discussion on talk radio about a bank using the poppy image and thus incurring the wrath of the legion. Without diving into the merits of either side of the debate, I find it a sad distraction from the true purpose of Remembrance Day.

Let's put this nonsense aside and salute the heroes who have won our freedom – and continue to defend it. Whatever you're doing today, take time to think about where we'd be without them. To all the veterans, and your families: Thank you.
