Agencies clarify flour enrichment requirements

Sept. 2, 2009 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Health Canada would like to clarify the requirements related to the manufacture, importation and sale of white flour and foods containing white flour. This letter outlines the current Canadian enrichment requirements for these products.

The mandatory enrichment of white flour with B vitamins, iron and folic acid is a cornerstone of Canada's fortification program aimed at helping to prevent nutrient deficiencies and maintain or improve the nutritional quality of the food supply.
